Expectations and Qualifications

  • Some experience and knowledge of plants is required.

  • English proficiency is not required; we are open to hiring Spanish-speaking monolingual candidates.

  • The work schedule for a full time employee is 36-40hrs/week unless directed differentlyby your T eam Lead.

  • Show up to work at your start time.

  • Show up to work well rested, fed, sober, and ready for the tasks that fall within your job description.

  • Work cooperatively as a member of a team!

  • Be gracious, and help out your fellow co-workers. You should say yes to the ask for help, unless there is a very time-sensitive task you are doing, and if that is the case,communicate your opinion respectfully. If we all help each other, the work seems easier and more pleasant.

  • Ask questions and for help when unsure how to handle a task

  • Learn new skills and share existing skills with others

  • Be a role model with other participants through good example, good work ethic, and good communication

  • Passion for environmental conservation, community engagement, and sustainable agriculture.

  • Ability to perform physical outdoor labor, including lifting and carrying heavy items up to 50lbs and using gardening tools.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse community members.

  • Self-motivated, reliable, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.

  • Basic proficiency with mobile devices and time management applications.

  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English is a plus but not required.

    Responsibilities of a Nursery Technician:

  • Plant Propagation: Propagate a variety of plants through seed sowing, cuttings, grafting, and other horticultural techniques to maintain and expand nursery stock.

  • Plant Care and Maintenance: Provide daily care for plants, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, and monitoring for pests and diseases.

  • Pest and Disease Management: Implement integrated pest management strategies to control and prevent plant pests and diseases in an environmentally responsible manner.

  • Nursery Upkeep: Maintain cleanliness and organization of nursery facilities, including greenhouses, shade houses, and outdoor growing areas.

  • Irrigation Management: Assist in the setup, maintenance, and monitoring of irrigation systems to ensure optimal watering schedules and efficient water use.

  • Inventory Management: Monitor and record plant growth, health, and treatments; maintain accurate inventory records and assist with stock ordering.

  • Customer Assistance: Provide knowledgeable assistance to customers and visitors in plant selection, care instructions, and answer horticultural inquiries.
    Community Engagement: Work with volunteers, community members, and staff to receive educational programs and workshops related to urban agriculture and food justice.

  • Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with safety protocols and environmental regulations within nursery operations.

  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain nursery equipment and tools safely and effectively.

  • Physical Tasks: Assist with loading and unloading plant materials, supplies, and equipment as needed.

  • Team Collaboration: Contribute to a positive team environment by communicating effectively and supporting co-workers in daily tasks.

  • Record-Keeping: Maintain detailed records of activities, including planting schedules, treatment applications, and environmental conditions.

Salary/Benefits

  • Planting Justice offers a competitive pay rate and benefits package including generous PTO. Our base pay starts at $20 an hour.
