Roles & Responsibilities
Job Summary
The direct supervisor will be the Education Coordinator, with guidance provided by on-site team members.
The main responsibility of the position is to lead and support the ongoing and forthcoming educational programs and relationships on behalf of Planting Justice. Including but not limited too:
Sobrante Park Nursery Internships
Aquaponics Farm (forthcoming)
Other PJ Education Sites:
Dewey Academy (kitchen assistant, landscape maintenance)
McClymonds High School (landscape maintenance, daily watering)
The Smoothie internship Program (support staff)
Forthcoming program sites
Responsibilities of the Educator
Assist in educational programming outside the nursery, such as culinary arts classes at schools and community gardens, including curriculum preparation and cleanup.
Attend weekly program meetings and monthly staff meetings, as well as required trainings, punctually.
Maintain communication with the Education Team Coordinator regarding schedules, task lists, and lesson plans.
Contribute to curriculum development, including "Plant! Cook! Organize!" collective curriculum.
Engage in local, regional, and national partnerships with social justice organizations.
Procure necessary supplies for classes and workshops and assist in media documentation of education team activities.
Support education team's use of Planting Justice's curriculum in food justice, culinary arts, and permaculture design.
Ensure positive experiences and educational opportunities for youth participants.
Track participant attendance, program lesson plans, and project expenses.
Participate in community events, panel discussions, and meetings to strengthen relations and explore growth opportunities.
Supervise youth interns during absence of team members.
Assist in grant reporting, metrics collection, and contract creation and tracking with partners.
Recruit participants and collect necessary information and forms.
Desired Skills & Experience
Prior experience with teaching in the public school system or the demonstrated ability to develop and facilitate curriculum for youth.
Experience as a youth advocate, mentor, case manager, re-entry coordinator, community organizer for the abolition of the prison industrial complex, or any other related experience in supporting people re-orienting to life after incarceration.
Experience with agro-ecology, traditional ecological knowledge, gardening, farming, Indigenous agriculture practices, or herbalism.
Ability to develop and teach curricula related to food sovereignty, racial justice, community healing, culinary arts, and plants.
Ability to work independently and take initiative.
Experience with cooking.
Experience with landscaping power tools and garden maintenance, or willingness to learn.
A clear commitment to a healing-centered, decolonial, and feminist approach
Maintain positive working relationships with a diverse set of community partners, program participants, and staff members.
Ability to remain open-minded, patient, empathetic, and growth-oriented through challenging work experiences.
Ability to speak other languages other than English is a plus.
Competent with Google Suite.
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail.
Willingness to learn.
Full-time availability.
Able to be flexible and willing to perform other tasks as assigned.
Valid driver’s license as well as a clean driving record, must provide MVR from CA DMV.
Physical Requirements
Ability to move around the nursery, school campuses, or other work locations to meet with staff members, attend meetings, or supervise educational programs.
Ability to lift and carry materials: may need to lift and carry educational materials, supplies, or equipment to set up classrooms or events.
Ability to work tending to a garden which includes using power tools, weeding, planting, watering, as well as carrying tools and equipment, and driving the company truck.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to sit at a desk and use a computer for extended periods of time.
Compensation
Planting Justice offers a competitive pay rate and benefits package including generous PTO (20 days) as well as a 401K plan.
Our base pay for this position starts at $22 an hour.
Health Care coverage including dental, vision, life insurance and chiropractic coverage. Benefits start 90 days after completing the probationary period.
