Black Farmer Fund seeks a full-time Finance Director to lead finance operations and ensure accurate, efficient and compliant financial functions and reporting. Reporting to the Co-Executive Director, Internal Resilience/working extensively with our consulting CFO and outsourced bookkeeper, the Finance Director will manage all aspects of the finance cycle including recording revenue, tracking and release of restricted funds, supporting organizational budgeting and financial reporting. A qualified candidate will have experience with a CDFI (Community Development Financial Institution) or non profit lending organization that includes managing financial controls and reporting for multiple programs.

This is a remote, full-time position requiring 5% travel for in-person events and workshops. This position may require work outside of standard business hours. The ideal candidate must reside in the Northeast with a preference for applicants residing in the NYC metro area.

Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance and Accounting

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP (Generally accepted accounting principles) standards and regulatory requirements;

  • Oversee and manage the day to day financial administrative functions being performed by the outsourced bookkeeping team;

  • Strategize financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes;

  • Oversee Black Farmer Fund’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; strategize, administer and review all financial plans, ensure budget is maintained in the accounting system, and compare to actual results with a reporting view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate;

  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets, actual expenditures, investment and loan fund activities;

  • Ensure prompt and accurate month-end and year-end close processes in collaboration with the outsourced bookkeeping team;

  • Oversee the migration of the accounting system from QBO to Sage, working closely with an external consultant to handle the overall design and implementation, and ensure the integration of any related software systems;

  • Oversee all AP/AR processes including grants receivable, contractor payments and stipends for community members engaged in BFF programs and management of funding and releases;

  • Coordinate and oversee all audit activity; working closely with the external auditor and internal stakeholders;

  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period, tracking all restrictions by period and purpose; collate financial reporting materials for board of directors, government, corporate, and foundation grants;

  • Responsible for reporting (both presenting virtually and sharing written overviews, reports, etc.) to the board of directors on a quarterly basis;

  • Track BFF direct loan/investment portfolio from the point of loan or grant approval through refinancing or repayment; leveraging the loan accounting system to ensure all borrower activity is being tracked and reported correctly;

  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program leaders; continuously collaborate with the program team to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations;

  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines;

Banking and Treasury

  • Ensure compliance with management of internal banking policies and procedures;

  • Promptly oversee the monthly reconciliation of all bank accounts;

  • Create and maintain waterfalls for managing uses of operating and investment funds and cash reserves;

  • Initiate banking transfers as necessary;

  • Maintain banking relationships as necessary:

Payroll and Benefits Processing

  • Oversee bi-weekly payroll; reimbursements, stipends and other contractor related payments in the payroll software system

  • Manage and track allocations of payroll by class in the accounting system;

  • Coordinating with Operations Director, administer and process employee benefit paperwork;

  • Manage deductions for employee benefits;

  • Reconcile quarterly payroll tax returns to accounting books/records.

Ideal Candidate

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years related accounting experience in private foundation/public charity settings with lending programs. Knowledge of not-for-profit GAAP is required. Minimum of a BA; CPA and/or MBA preferred;

  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments;

  • A track record in grants management and fund accounting as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential;

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to the Black Farmer Fund’s mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker;

  • Ability to balance a culture of abundance regarding budgets and work plans with the discipline of stewardship regarding grants management and investment allocations;

  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers;

  • Ability to effectively communicate the work of Black Farmer Fund in a personable, passionate and engaging manner;

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a remote work setting;

  • A commitment to solidarity economy values, such as racial, economic, climate justice, cooperative ownership and systems change;

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software (Sage Intacct, Quickbooks Online, and/or Netsuite, Salesforce, Justworks, DownHome Solutions, Divvy);

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel proficiency is a must), Google Drive and online communications tools, such as Zoom;

  • Experience with project management tools (e.g., Asana, Slack);

  • Experience with Sage & QBO accounting software

  • $100-115k depending on experience;
